How do I autorun a PDF file from a CD or USB drive?
A PDF is one of the best things to autorun, because every Windows 10 and 11 PC can open one: Microsoft Edge is the built-in PDF viewer, and many PCs also have Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Set it up
- Copy the PDF into your Base Folder (the root or any subfolder).
- In AutoRun Wizard, open the Auto Launch tab and choose Launch File(s).
- Click Configure, then the [...] button for the first file, and select your PDF as the File to Autorun.
- Save, then click Test.
The PDF opens in whatever program the end user has set as their PDF viewer.
Make sure it opens even with no PDF viewer set
Under the file's options, check Force the file to be opened within the default Internet Browser. Edge, Chrome and Firefox all display PDFs, so this works even on a PC where the .pdf association was removed or points to an editor.
Tips
- Use a short file name without special characters, such as
Catalog-2026.pdf. - To show a cover page or menu first, autorun an HTML page that links to several PDFs. See adding a menu to your autorun.
- Large PDFs open faster from USB than from CD. Compress images inside the PDF before you burn it.
- Remember that on Windows 10 and 11 the user clicks the AutoPlay prompt first for a CD, and a USB drive never autoruns. See Windows 10 and 11 behavior.
