Should I use the installer or the portable version of AutoRun Wizard?
Both versions on the download page are the same program with the same features. The only difference is how they get onto your PC.
| Installer | Portable (ZIP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Runs a normal Windows setup | Extract the ZIP and run the program from that folder |
| Start menu and desktop shortcuts | Yes | No |
| Uninstall | From Windows Settings | Delete the folder |
| Runs from a USB stick | No | Yes |
| Changes to Windows | Standard install | None; settings stay in its own folder |
Which should I pick?
- Most people: the installer. It puts AutoRun Wizard on the Start menu and is the version the tutorial follows.
- The portable version is for advanced users who cannot install software on their PC, want to carry AutoRun Wizard on a USB stick, or prefer no installer.
Portable tips
- Extract the whole ZIP before you run it. Running it from inside the ZIP window fails, because Windows extracts only the one file you clicked.
- If Windows shows "Windows protected your PC" for the extracted program, click More info, then Run anyway. This happens because the file came from a downloaded ZIP. See Windows security warnings.
- Keep your Base Folders outside the portable program's folder, so you can update AutoRun Wizard by replacing its folder.
Try it yourself. My AutoRun is free to download and fully functional - see how it handles this on your own USB drive or CD.
