Q: Can I use AutoRun Wizard to autorun files on a USB Flash storage drive? (43,173 views)

Microsoft has mixed support for autorunning of USB removeable drives. As stated here from Microsoft. "The Autorun capabilities are restricted to CD-ROM drives and fixed disk drives. If you need to make a USB storage device perform Autorun, the device must not be marked as a removable media device and the device must contain an Autorun.inf file and a startup application."

If another vendor states they can create an autorun USB for all OS's, they are wrong! Something would have to be installed on the computer prior to putting the flash drive into the computer. Not very seemless. Microsoft Windows controls whether or not your autorun gets executed. If Windows does not detect the autorun.inf, it will never launch your autorun. Some vendors "claim" they can autorun off of USB - they are using an pre-installed application to trick Windows into thinking your USB is a cd-rom.

Windows Vista can autorun directly from USB. U3 drives have firmware to trick PC into thinking that a partition is a CD to get the autorun to work. Windows XP will Autoplay - meaning it will popup a box to choose what to do and the program you specify in the Autorun.inf will be displayed but it won't autoplay automatically when the USB drive is placed into the computer.

If you choose to run the Autorun.inf, AutoRun Wizard will help you to save the configuration setup saved on to the USB flash storage drive.

However Microsoft has stated if you have Windows XP SP2 they added the ability to support the autoplay function on removeable usb flash drives. If you do not have Windows XP SP2 or higher, this functionality will not work.

Make sure you write the contents of the Base Folder and not the actual base folder itself to the USB Flash Drive. The following files MUST exist at the the root of the USB Flash drive:

-autorun.inf
-autorun.exe
-autorun.dat

Along with the files above, you must also include all of the files you used to create your autorun. Remember, your USB drive might not autorun on all installations, if any.
